Risks associated with transporting electric vehicles on ferries

Risks associated with transporting electric vehicles on ferries

Let’s first look at the data from previous years.

In February 2017, a fire broke out on the upper vehicle deck of the MV Honor, due to a faulty solenoid valve in the starter motor of one of the vehicles being transported. The fire caused significant damage to the Honor’s vehicle deck and about 5,000 vehicles on board.

In May 2018, a fire broke out on the 11th deck of the Auto Banner. The fire was allegedly caused by an overheated second-hand car on board. A helicopter dropped water from the air and more than 40 fire trucks sprayed water on the hull, eventually extinguishing the fire. All 28 crew members were safely evacuated with no casualties.

In March 2018, a fire broke out on the Grand America, which subsequently listed to starboard, causing it to capsize and sink to the seafloor at a depth of about 4,600 meters. The resulting oil spill spread 10 km and the vessel was carrying 2,000 cars and 365 containers, 45 of which were believed to contain hazardous materials.

On New Year’s Eve 2018, the Sincere Ace caught fire in the Pacific Ocean with over 3,500 cars on board. The crew had to abandon ship and although 16 crew members were rescued, five crew members tragically lost their lives in the incident.

In June 2019, the Diamond Highway caught fire in the South China Sea and the crew had to abandon ship with 6,354 cars on board. Fortunately, all 25 crew members were rescued.

Why do ferries need car fire blankets?

Characteristics of lithium battery fires:

Lithium batteries may experience thermal runaway at high temperatures, causing violent combustion. Such fires are not only difficult to extinguish, but also release toxic gases, posing a threat to passengers and crew.

Limitations of ferry space:

The space on the ferry is relatively closed. When a fire occurs, the fire spreads quickly, and traditional fire-fighting measures may not be effective in time. Fire blankets can quickly cover the burning vehicle and prevent the flames from spreading.

Limitations of crew training and emergency response:

Although the crew has received fire-fighting training, in actual fires, facing the rapidly spreading fire and thick smoke, the operation is extremely difficult. The operation of the fire blanket is relatively simple and can effectively control the fire in a short time.

Electric vehicles are the future. Let’s move forward safely.
