South Korean companies deal with “electric vehicle phobia”

(Seoul, 2nd) A “big explosion” occurred in the parking lot under a certain apartment community building in Incheon, South Korea. A white Mercedes electric car suddenly emitted white smoke, then caught fire and exploded. The fire spread rapidly, affecting more than 140 cars and causing power outages in 480 households. The fire authorities deployed 177 personnel, smoke exhaust vehicles and more than 80 equipment, and successfully put out the fire at 2:35 pm after 8 hours and 20 minutes.

In addition, the fire accident caused 20 residents, including 7 children under the age of 10, to be choked by thick smoke, and a firefighter suffered dizziness and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Some netizens posted on the community’s online forum that in fact, at the beginning of the fire, the residents and security personnel of the building had tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, but in the end, due to the characteristics of lithium batteries, the firefighting work failed.

The Korea Fire Agency pointed out that from 2018 to last year, there were a total of 160 fires caused by electric vehicles, and there was a trend of increasing year by year, including 3 cases in 2018, 7 cases in 2019, 11 cases in 2020, 24 cases in 2021, 43 cases in 2022, and 72 cases in 2023.
