How do car fire blankets extinguish EV fires?

How to deal with EV fire with a car fire blanket?

When electric vehicles catch fire, the temperatures can be very high. Specifically, when lithium-ion batteries burn in a state of thermal runaway, the temperature can reach or exceed 1000°C (1832°F). Such high temperatures can not only cause the battery to spontaneously ignite but can also cause the surrounding materials to burn, making the fire more difficult to control.

Let’s see what happens when the EV catches fire.

1. Lithium-ion battery thermal runaway: When a lithium-ion battery experiences thermal runaway, the temperature can quickly rise to between 500°C and 700°C (932°F and 1292°F).
2. Complete combustion: In a complete combustion situation, the flame temperature of a lithium-ion battery can reach 1000°C (1832°F) or higher.
3. High-temperature issues: Even if oxygen is isolated, the lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles can still generate extremely high temperatures (over 1000°C) when thermal runaway occurs. This heat is generated by chemical reactions inside the battery and has nothing to do with external oxygen.
3. Continued combustion: The chemical reactions inside lithium-ion batteries can continue without external oxygen, so even if a fiberglass fire blanket is used, the fire source may still remain hot and continue to burn.
4. Reignition risk: Even if the fire is temporarily controlled, the high temperature and chemical reactions inside the electric vehicle battery may still cause reignition.

When dealing with electric vehicle fires, using a car fire blanket combined with traditional fire-fighting tools can greatly improve the fire-fighting effect and safety.

1. Use a car fire blanket: Use a high-silica fire blanket to quickly cover the electric vehicle part that is on fire. The fire blanket should completely cover the fire source to isolate oxygen and suppress the flame.

2. Combined with traditional fire-fighting tools: After covering the fire blanket, use a large amount of water to continuously cool the electric vehicle battery and other parts of the fire. Water can effectively absorb heat, reduce battery temperature, and prevent thermal runaway. It is best to use a high-pressure water gun for cooling.

3. Use a fire extinguisher:
CO₂ fire extinguisher: If there is a local fire source, using a CO₂ fire extinguisher can effectively extinguish the fire. CO₂ fire extinguishers can reduce the oxygen concentration around the fire source and have a cooling effect.
Dry powder fire extinguisher: Dry powder fire extinguishers are suitable for extinguishing electrical fires and liquid fires. They can be used on the basis of fire blanket coverage to prevent the flame from rekindling.
Special fire extinguishing foam: Some special fire extinguishing foams can effectively extinguish battery fires. It is recommended to use them under the guidance of professionals.

4. Subsequent processing: After the initial fire extinguishing, continue to monitor the fire source to ensure that the fire will not reignite. Contact professional fire brigades and rescue teams for further processing of the electric vehicle.

The following is a test video of our joint Chinese Fire Department. Our car fire blanket has obtained the EN 13501, NFPA701, and 1000 ℃ test report.
